The Dalai Lama on compassion

  • December 3, 2018

Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries.  Without them humanity cannot survive. The Dalai Lama says that as human beings we are all the same. We all want happiness and do not want suffering. If our minds are at peace even physical pain will not disturb our calm. (If our minds are upset, physical comfort will not bring peace.) He advocates the cultivation of warm-heartedness and human values such as compassion, forgiveness, tolerance, contentment and self-discipline. He is concerned with encouraging people to be happy.

This is not compassion

  • November 29, 2018

We are required to welcome strangers. The people running from the south to the north, many of them for months, are running from fear and danger sufficient to drive them from their homes, often with small children in tow. They all know the United States is the world’s pre-eminent nation of immigrants. And they believe the story that the United States is a place to seek a better life. At our border, they should be welcomed in the moment, and then their stories should be heard before we decide how to accept them into our nation, or not, as the case may deserve. Many people believe in God and the words...

All you need is love

Compassion In essentially all religions, once you get past the rules about God, the first value that is said to be universal is compassion and respect for everyone. No one can earn respect from others if they are not compassionate and considerate toward them.* Buddha said that we must love our enemies as well, and that loving everyone, even the one who hates, is true compassion.* It can be argued that the fundamental core ethical value among humans is "The Golden Rule," which basically says “One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself.” That one goes back at least...

Our Heroine

  • November 1, 2018

"Our generation will never be able to fly because the adult generations have used up all our carbon budget." This 15-year-old autistic girl spends her Fridays on the steps of Sweden's Parliament trying to wake people up - especially public officials - about the climate crisis. “I am doing this because nobody else is doing anything." she says. "It is my moral responsibility to do what I can. "I want the politicians to prioritize the climate question, focus on the climate and treat it like a crisis.” Her story has been published in the New Yorker and other online publications, and is widely...

What does “existential crisis” mean?

  • October 31, 2018

It means that many lifeforms are becoming extinct and it is no longer beyond reason that the human species faces that possibility in the next several generations. In our stories, in books and movies, an existential crisis moves heroes on quests to seize the day, to reverse the danger, to save life on Earth. In this time, we seem to be still looking for that hero, as the anti-hero rages across the stage spewing ignorance and hatred, with the world nearly in his grasp. Our Hero is still in the bat cave somewhere, so several somewhat lesser heroes have to take things in hand. Each of these...

The other side of the climate equation

  • October 30, 2018

CARBON: GET IT IN THE GROUND The natural solution to climate crisis is to use all life forms on Earth to pull carbon out of the atmosphere and put it back in the ground. Every yard and every park and every pasture and farm and prairie and forest should be enlisted in the effort to survive and thrive. Every microbe, every living animal should work on the carbon brigade. Get it in the ground!

What to do:

  • October 29, 2018

“To live without the daily sacrifice of selfless service – to work just for oneself, or worse, to do nothing at all – is simply to be a thief.” -The Bhagavad Gita Which is to say, any amount of self service for pleasure or desire is a sinful detraction from the Main Universal System Thing (MUST). Work with the System. Serve the Creation. Never stop. NEXT
